Here's a mix of some assignments I've had of late.

First day of the strawberry picking season at a local pick-your-own farm.

From a story about a young girl becoming active again after a battle with toxic shock syndrome, a rare but often fatal illness.

Portrait of a fly fisherman who recently retired and was an innovative fly line product engineer for 3M.

The blackjack table a local fundraiser. I've never had so many people want me to take their photo- hooray for unlimited alcohol with their admission ticket to the event.

A bald eagle got hit by a car a few weeks ago and was rescued by a local couple who really love birds.

After getting up at 7am and driving to the wrong airport (how many airports can there be in Midland?), I found my way the right airport where I was supposed to shoot teenie boppers flying planes- real ones. It was part of the weeklong Midland Aviation Camp and Saturday morning was their reward- they got to co-pilot a Cessna with their instructor. I ended up crammed in the back of one of them and every time the youngster took the controls, things got a little bumpy.

Homecoming

The 1460th National Guard unit returned home from Iraq on Sunday morning. I spent the day with one family, trying to lay some additional groundwork on a story that doesn't look like it's going to happen. The search continues...

Down and Out

The last local team in our coverage area bit the dust today in the state semifinals. It was a good day, because it felt like summer for the first time this year and the game was over in less than an hour and a half. Here are 2 frames that I liked from today.

This frame was from Saturday morning at the annual Midland Community Center Dow RunWalk.

Extras

This regional semifinal softball game lasted 17 innings. 17! But it took me until the 15th inning to get anything I liked.

First photo is a play at the plate (she was out) and the 2nd photo is the girl getting a hug from a teammate after her game winning hit.

The seasons are finally winding down, and hopefully this will be the last of softball that will appear on here for a long long time (maybe forever).

Grads

I'm all settled in in Midland and I'm liking this place a lot so far.

Shot a graduation at Bullock Creek HS in Midland tonight and the last frame is from St. Paul's in Norwalk from my time at the Register.

Recap

>> Jun 1, 2009

I put up a new gallery on my portfolio website- a collection from my time in Sandusky. Some were posted here on the blog in the past, and some weren't.

Click here to have a look.

Thanks to Luke and Jason at the Register for their support and encouragement. I had fun and learned a lot in my first experience at a newspaper.

I'm leaving soon for my next internship at the Midland Daily News in Midland, Michigan. I'm excited to be working with a really solid and young staff- John Tully, Nathan Morgan and photo editor Ryan Wood. You can check out their work on their brand spanking new Visuals section on the Midland website here.

Last Assignments for the Register

On my last day at the paper, I shot a summer league baseball game and did a super quick hit multimedia piece  on a tradition that seniors do at Margaretta High School on their last day of school. The little slideshow piece was shot in like 20 minutes and it's not that great, but I thought it was funny. (not sure why Vimeo is stretching the stills, because it was fine in the quick time file)

Also, Ohio University's annual multimedia website Soul of Athens launched today. My football piece made it in and there is a ton of other really great work on there. Check it out here. If you've only got time to watch one or 2, make sure you check out Maisie Crow's piece called "A Life Alone."
